‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ is now a WV state song

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Singer John Denver never called West Virginia home, but his 1970s hit “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is one of the state’s official songs.
Forty-three years after it first hit the airwaves with the words “Almost Heaven, West Virginia,” the Legislature approved a resolution Friday designating it as one of four state songs.
The song has resonated with residents for decades. It’s played after every West Virginia University basketball and football game. Denver sang it in person at the dedication of Mountaineer Field in Morgantown in 1980.
The state song effort was started two years ago by the widow of “Gilligan’s Island” actor Bob Denver, who is no relation. Dreama Denver is a Bluefield native. She says she got the idea after playing the song on her morning radio show in Princeton.

Aquapocalypse: Local Businesses Stand Strong

It’s been just over a month since the occurrence of what some have dubbed the “Aquapocalypse”, when the chemical MCHM was spilled into the Elk River from a Freedom Industries facility causing a water emergency for approximately 300,000 residents and numerous businesses across nine counties in West Virginia. “We lost a full weekend, and although we were one of the first places to reopen, we’re still using bottled water and bagged ice,” describes Keeley Steele, owner of Bluegrass Kitchen, Tricky Fish and Frütcake eateries.

To help regain lost profits and foot traffic, several organizations banded with local businesses to create public campaigns during the month of January. The Charleston Area Alliance launched “Back to Business Charlie West” (known as #BacktoBizCWV on social media), West Side Main Street promoted “Eat West, Shop West, Go West: Getting West Side Businesses Back in the Flow” and East End Main Street — “reHYDRATE”. Over 50 establishments, from restaurants and retail stores to local venues the Clay Center and Mountain Stage, participated in “reHYDRATE”, offering discounts and special offers on products and services. “All of these businesses were scared about lost revenue and getting people back in their door,” explains Steele. Steele’s restaurants also participated in the campaign. Bluegrass Kitchen held an extended “Tappy Hour”, Tricky Fish had margaritas on priced at $3.25 all day, and Frütcake offered free organic flavor shots for coffee. “I think it was successful,” Steele says. “It has been an exhausting couple of weeks, and I hope everyone saw an influx.”

The Colbert Report on the Water Crisis in West Virginia

“West Virginians go days without tap water after a chemical spill contaminates the supply.”
It’s Day 6 of the WV water crisis here in West Virginia and things are looking up as some zones have already had their water restored since yesterday, (check to see if your zone has been cleared). We posted a video recently showing news clips around the world as this event stirred up a world-wide conversation about clean water and efforts to help West Virginians in need. We’re very thankful for everyone’s efforts in lending a hand.
One running joke you may have seen over and over is the president of Freedom Industries drinking water as he speaks about the chemical leak contaminating the water in Charleston. Although it doesn’t seem he was doing this on purpose, it was pretty bad timing on his part, especially with this news being such a hot topic around the world. It’s that interview that went on to create lots of satirical photos and videos poking fun at the situation.

It seems Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have both put their two cents in about the chemical spill in Charleston and it’s all in good fun, these satirical shows aired on the Comedy Central Network yesterday, but can be found on this page. We’ve embedded The Colbert Report clip below, and we’ve supplied a link to The Daily Show’s full episode below as well. They have a much longer segment on the issue.
